ChickenMan Rocks Natuashish!
Do you think they had a good time? This photo of one of the students in Natuashish says it all. The youth centre was happy to make room for the instruments donated by ArtsCan Circle. The students will have a great time rocking out with 2 electric and 6 acoustic guitars, an acoustic bass guitar and 4 new keyboards. Key to the success of the trip was the participation of Etienne Riche, a musician and band council member from Sheshatshiu, Labrador. Also on this trip were Mike Stevens, Magoo and Trevor Mills. The team also visited Etienne's home community in Sheshatshiu and left additional instruments for the youth centre there as well. Here's Magoo's report......
"For the first time an ArtsCan Circle team was able to enlist a local musician to join us. Etienne Riche from Sheshatshui is the bass player in the very popular Innu band, Mishkemau. Mike has known him for a few years and invited him to come along with us to Natuashish. His connection with the kids was remarkable, their concentration and engagement was at another level when he spoke or played. He would sing a song in Innu and everyone would join in. The teachers commented to us afterwards, that they had not seen such a universal response, and this was with all ages. We had a wonderful jam one night with the guitar club at school. Students, some players who don't go to school, teachers and ourselves all joined in. We traded Innu songs, pop songs, self-penned tunes and the perfunctory Johnny Cash selections. - Magoo

The Great "Mask"arade in Pikangikum
November 16 - 21 found Carol Teal, David Anderson and Nancy Dutra back in Pikangikum engaging over 500 students in hands-on music and art workshops. It was a very busy week and we sincerely thank the school and Principal, Mick Staruck, who welcomed us back and made arrangements for working space for us. Our thanks to Kurt, in Guidance for helping with anything we needed and Lucy Strang, VP for working her usual scheduling miracles! Grade 4 mask makers David Anderson and 8th grade mask-makers
It was Nancy's first trip with ArtsCan Circle. She says, "The absolute highlight of this trip was watching a shy girl play a keyboard for the first time. Carol and I showed her a few tricks and watched as she tried again and again to learn the pieces. Watching her smile when she played a piece correctly was absolutely delightful. Seeing her confidence grow bit by bit was one of the best moments I experienced in Pikangikum. The worst or lowpoint? Hearing the kids joke about how their favourite thing to do was sniffing (gas)." -Nancy D.
And this was David Anderson's third trip to Pikangikum. He shares:
"I think the big thing that hit me this time is the importance of the teams and individuals returning to the community. It’s probably true of all communities, but I think Pikangikum especially profits from the repetition. They need to know who we are and how we got there. The question that one of the children asked Nancy, "Why are you here?" puts it rather succinctly, and it perhaps points to an underlying wonder that all residents of Pikangikum must have: "Why are those guys here?". It's important for the communityto know that we are there under the auspices of ArtsCan Circle and I think it's also important for the community to know that ArtsCan Circle is not a social service agency and that the teams are artists who are volunteering our time. I think that perhaps the best part of what ArtsCan Circle does is to make connections between people, so any way we can remove obstacles to our meeting with them is good.
To go to Pikangikum is always a bit like climbing a mountain for me: the intensity of the work is amazing but the rewards are great. This time I felt a new acceptance or at least awareness of our presence. The conditions of poverty that people deal with are embarrassing to see, but their perseverance and good humour is infectious. I am still searching for the deep story of Pikangikum."-David A.
