Trip Report - Wabaseemoong Workshops

Ron Kanutski, Mary Hamer, Randy Cameron and Carol Teal travelled to Wabaseemoog (White Dog), Ontario for a week in March '09 to run workshops with the youth there.  The students were great and we had a wonderful week writing songs, drumming, singing and creating their own musical instruments.

Wabseemoong students with Marimbas they made.

The students enjoyed using the drums, guitars & keyboards we brought for their community.  The drums have found a home as part of the Indigenous Culture classes in the school and will add to that program.

Ron and students with new donated drums.

Thanks to the Principal, Ron McDonald, the teachers and support staff for making us welcome and helping schedule all the workshops during the school day.  Each day after school we were able to teach keyboard and guitar workshops in the Community Resource Centre after school.  Thanks to Sean, Hugh and the staff at the Resource Centre for providing space for after school programs and making us welcome!  We had a wonderful time with your creative enthusiastic kids and we can't wait to come back!

Ron & Randy teach guitar at the Family Resource Centre after school.

From Marty & Randy...

"So many great memories from the Wabaseemong trip!  The kids were wonderful to work with.  They were always respectful to us and to one another. They invested their projects with love and attention.   I will always remember working in  the overly warm classroom with the window open for some fresh air and hearing the sounds of the marimbas ‘tonk, tonking’ as kids headed out on the last day with the instruments they had made and the sound of small voices coming to the window calling, ‘More gimp, Marty. More gimp!" (material for braiding into jewelry, etc.)

Marty says, "One of the teachers told me how great it was to see the kids so enthused – said she hadn’t seem them that enthused in a while."

We get email from the North!

"Thank you so much!

I just wanted to thank the ArtsCan team for coming to our school as the kids were very touched by the experience they had with them.  They continue to talk about their experiences and are even more eager to grow as musicians!  The level four student who received the guitar was extremely grateful and has even started composing his own music.  He recently received his college application papers and says he would love to continue his education in the music field.  Thank you so much for everything, it was an absolute pleasure to have such a group of people visit our school!

Devon Conway, Music Teacher"

Queen's Bush Bluegrass Club Supports ArtsCan Circle

Many thanks to the folks in Owen Sound who participated in the Queen's Bush Bluegrass Club concert on March 26th.  The Executive of the club dedicated the evening to ArtsCan Circle.  Judy Fink and Dave Joyce were on hand to represent and share information about ArtsCan Circle.  The Queen's Bush Executive Band donated their honorarium to ArtsCan, the GrassFyre Bluegrass Band made a donation as well as participation and financial support from the audience.

The concert was part of the Northern Bluegrass Committee Winter Concert Series and featured Junior Sisk and Ramblers Choice from Virginia.  The weather was excellent and the Legion was full of Bluegrass enthusiasts.  Bernie Melosh, President of the club, presented a cheque for $300 to Judy Fink and Dave Joyce on behalf of the club.  Thanks very much!

On Saturday evening, March 28th,Tom McCreight presented the 5th Annual Silverbirch Charity Concertat the Uxbridge Music Hall and raised $3,200 for ArtsCan Circle!  Close to 200 people attending thiswonderful evening of music and humour. The Dnes Sisters opened the show with their fiddles, Wendell Ferguson inspired and delighted the audience with his quick wit and awesome guitar playing, Silverbirch entertained with their usual toe-tapping traditional bluegrass music. Thanks to Tom, Gene, Graham, Jan and Walter for donating their talents.

Our thanks to the performers for a great evening, to the merchants of Uxbridge for their donations, and to the Royal Canadian Legion, the Rotary Club, and the Lions Club for financially supporting this event.  ArtsCan Circle sincerely appreciates the dedication and hard work by Tom McCreight who organized the concert and publicized the work of ArtsCan Circle through the local newspapers.  Thank you, Tom!

More Thanks!

Our appreciation goes to ArtsCan Circle supporter, Shirley Wheatley.  At her retirement celebration in Markham, Shirley requested donations to ArtsCan Circle to honour her years of service as a health-care advocate and nurse at the Markham-Stouffville Hospital.  Her friends and colleagues celebrated Shirley’s contributions to her profession with heart-felt speeches, delicious treats and a generous donation to ArtsCan Circle.

Thanks to John McNaughton and the Six Nations Bluegrass Festival for hosting a booth for an ArtsCan Circle display at their festival on April 4.  It all helps to spread the word about ArtsCan Circle and build our networks!  Thanks!
