Aeroplan May is Aeroplan Miles Month!!

It's a bird!  It's a plane!
It's another  ArtsCan Team flying to a community in the far North!
Your Aeroplan Miles can help!

We're happy to announce we're having our annual Aeroplan Miles donation campaign this month. During the month of May we're collecting donated Aeroplan Miles for ArtsCan Circle.  These miles cut our trip costs in half by allowing us to fly on Aeroplan Miles for the first leg of our journeys to the North.   Over the past year the miles we collected in our first campaign were used to fly teams to Mishkeegogang, Pikangikum and Wabaseemoong, Ontario as well as First Nations communities in Labrador.

15,000 Aeroplan Miles will fly an ArtsCan team member from Toronto to Thunder Bay.

25,000 Aeroplan miles will fly a team member to Goose Bay, Labrador.

Your donations will be pooled to get our teams in the air and on the ground with the youth in the far north.

Please donate any amount of Air Miles from your Aeroplan account and help get music and art programs to youth who will benefit.  Please click on this link {ArtsCan Circle} to go to our home page and download a form from our website.  Just click on the .pdf file of the simple form, fill it out and fax or mail it to Carol in the office.  OR contact Carol and she'll be happy to send you the form by email or post. Simple instructions are on the form.

Thanks for your Aeroplan support!

Wabaseemoong & Dokis Workshops

Here's a photo from the recent trip to Wabaseemoong, ON in March 2009.

Students in Wabaseemoong try out the new drums and learn songs with Ron Kanutski

The children in Dokis went for a walk and found inspiration for writing a song.

Song by students in Dokis -  "Billy's Horses".  Here's the lyrics...

"Billy's Horses"  by Dokis Students - (facilitated by Katherine Wheatley)

I got apples, I got carrots, I got a handful of hay,

I'm gonna borrow Billy's horses and go for a ride on his sleigh.

I'm not gonna till my Mommy that I'll be going away,

I'm gonna pick up all my friends, We'll have fun all day.

Chorus:  Riding around I feel O.K

Riding around, on Billy's sleigh.

Riding through the sugar bush where maple trees are tapped

Take the pails to the sugar shack and dump out all the sap

Boiling up that maple syrup, stir with a big wooden spoon

Pour it over fresh white snow, we'll be eating taffy soon!

Chorus:  Riding around I feel O.K.

  Riding around, on Billy's sleigh.

Katherine Wheatley teaches guitar to students in Dokis.

ArtsCan Circle Facilitates Youth Creativity with Support from Canada Council for the Arts

ArtsCan Circle has been awarded a $20,000 grant by Canada Council for the Arts to support arts programs for Indigenous youth.  The grant will help send teams of artists and musicians to Pikangikum, Ontario and Natuashish, Labrador in fall 2009 to lead workshops in music and art activities for youth.

Thanks Canada Council!

"I'm trying to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable." - Jon Brooks.

"Toronto singer/songwriter Jon Brooks is the latest in a long, honourable -and depleting - line of folksingers who write and perform to further the cause of social justice."  - Robert Reid, The Waterloo Record

"Epic." – Greg Quill, The Toronto Star

In a recent interview, multi-award winning Canadian folk singer-songwriter, Jon Brooks was quoted: "the mandate of song is to improve the world; to lift humanity by way of inspiring empathy as ultimately, the songwriter is trying to politicize love, to lobby for compassion to be our principle representative in government office."

Thanks to Newmarket Folk Society

Thanks to all the folks who came out and supported ArtsCan Circle at the Benefit concert in Newmarket on April 18th sponsored by the Newmarket Folk Society.  Thanks to a great bunch of wonderful musicians from the area plus the Good Brothers and Russell deCarle (Prairie Oyster) & Steve Briggs (Bebop Cowboys) a fantastic evening was had by all and the venue was packed!  We raised $2,300 for ArtsCan Circle!

Our sincere thanks to the musicians, the volunteers and the Newmarket Folk Society for their support of ArtsCan Circle.  We had a great time, too!

Thanks to Milan Chvostek for the great photographs of the event.

The next trip is currently being planned to return to Mishkeegogamang, ON for May 2009.  Please help us fund this trip.  The kids are excited about us returning to their school and we have plans for activities and fun in a location in the community on Victoria Day Monday.   We hope to take new harmonicas for the children as well as some guitars and keyboards.  Your gift can help fund the harmonicas, art materals and transportation costs.
