May is Aeroplan Miles Month!!

Have you got some Aeroplan miles to share?

Do you know someone who might share their miles?

We really need to fill up our Aeroplan Miles account during this May month campaign.  We're only allowed one month to collect Aeroplan Miles so please act now if you can help.  Aeroplan miles are just like a cash donation in terms of providing workshops for Native Youth in the far North.  They help us get musicians and artists to the students as well as instruments that are left in the Northern communities.

So far we are far short of our goal of surpassing last year's 200,000 donated miles.  Any amount can help!  Just fill in the form from our website with your Aeroplan Miles Account number and the amount of Miles you'd like to donate.  Sign the form, date it in May 2009 and Fax it or mail it to the ArtsCan office as on the form.  {click here for the form}

Here's two links to video clips of songwriting workshops from our recent trip to Mishkeegogamang, ON - your Aeroplan miles can make this fun a reality for more children & youth.
Please help us keep the kids singing!
Thanks!

Mishkeegogamang, ON

May 17 - 23, 2009 -   Richard Knechtel, David Joyce, Nancy Dutra & Carol Teal travelled to Mishkeegogamang, ON (just south of Pickle Lake) to spend a week with the students at Missabay Community School in the Mishkeegogamang First Nations Community.  They had a wonderful time writing songs, making rhythm instruments & crafts, teaching guitar & harmonica.  The students enjoyed all the activities and made progress in their musical skills.

"I'm trying to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable." - Jon Brooks.

"Toronto singer/songwriter Jon Brooks is the latest in a long, honourable -and depleting - line of folksingers who write and perform to further the cause of social justice."  - Robert Reid, The Waterloo Record

"Epic." – Greg Quill, The Toronto Star

In a recent interview, multi-award winning Canadian folk singer-songwriter, Jon Brooks was quoted: "the mandate of song is to improve the world; to lift humanity by way of inspiring empathy as ultimately, the songwriter is trying to politicize love, to lobby for compassion to be our principle representative in government office."

Guitar Raffle Winner

Bluegrass Sundays is pleased to announce that the Epiphone guitar donated by Long and McQuade was won by Helen Sienerth of Uxbridge.  Bluegrass Sundays, (the winter concert series) was the primary location for sale of the raffle tickets, but members of the Newmarket Folk Society, Pineridge Bluegrass Club, the audience at the Silverbirch Charity Concert, and attendees at a number of other events were able to purchase tickets as well.  The winning ticket was drawn on April 19th at the final concert of the 2009 Bluegrass Sundays season.

The lucky winner, Helen Sienerth, has contributed to ArtsCan Circle through the Annual Silverbirch Charity Concert in Uxbridge for many years.  Thank you to H&R Block and Helen for her support of ArtsCan Circle.  Through Helen’s generosity, the guitar has been donated back to ArtsCan Circle.

Approximately $700 was raised to support ArtsCan Circle through this raffle. The generosity of the music community is greatly appreciated.  Many thanks to all of those who purchased tickets.

Thanks to Campbellford Rotary!

Many thanks to the Rotary Club of Campbellford, who presented a Spring Talent Showcase on May 9 with an amazing variety of wonderful performers.  They raised over $1,000 for ArtsCan Circle and an equal amount for the Campbellford Palliative Care program.  Plus everyone in attendance had a great evening of entertainment.  Thanks to George & Bev Scott for spearheading this event, the performers, the volunteers and all the Rotary folks who helped make it a success!
Way to go!

ArtsCan Circle's Mission & Mandate

If you're new on our mailing list -- Welcome!

ArtsCan Circle is a charitable organization with a mission to encourage the self-esteem of Indigenous youth in isolated Canadian communities through a cooperative exploration of the arts.

ArtsCan Circle sends teams of artists to remote Indigenous communities to conduct interactive music and arts workshops with Indigenous youth-at-risk.

We also collect donations of new and used musical instruments, recording equipment and music instruction materials to set up instrument lending libraries and recording studios in these communities. Trips are funded by a variety of fund-raising efforts including donations from individuals, organizations, corporations and foundations, benefit concerts and events, grants, support from participating communities, etc.  We strive to build and strengthen relationships by returning to each participating community annually or more frequently.

ArtsCan Circle hopes to facilitate the education, health and development of Aboriginal youth by:

·      promoting self-esteem and self-expression

·      honouring traditional culture and language;

·      sharing and teaching musical, visual arts, recording and performance skills;

·      facilitating the creative processes and the achievement of positive recognition; and

·      bearing witness and bringing voice to the struggle and achievements of Indigenous youth and their communities.

We hope you'll enjoy this newletter and visit our website and/or Facebook page to learn more about ArtsCan Circle!
