Skate Shopping Tips
The type of skates your child needs is dependant on your child's size, strength and the program you're enrolled in (i.e. Soft Tech - Recreational Skates are not recommended for StarSkate Group). Here are a few general shopping tips, for more specific information please speak to your coach.
1. Molded plastic skates are not recommended since they do not allow for ankle flexion
2. Look for ankle stability i.e. the skater should be able to stand and walk in the skate without wobbling or falling in or out at the ankles
3. Have the skater bend their knees and press their toes to the front of the boot. If you can just fit a pencil at the heel this will allow for some growth. Avoid buying skates which pinch or are too big
4. Take out the insole and see how the skater’s foot fits for width and length. If need be some skate shops can heat mold and stretch skates
5. If you are buying used skates make sure they are not too broken down. You want a firm boot therefore if the ankle crease is long and the ankle is floppy the skate is too broken down
6. Prior to the skater’s first lesson have them walk around the house in their skates (with the guards on of course) and go public skating to help them get used to their new skates.
Skates are the most important piece of equipment for skaters so please shop carefully! Check out the links on the sidebar for a reputable skate shop near you.
