Dress for Success

Outfitting your child in the proper attire for skating lessons can make a big difference in their skating experience!

CanSkate: Clothing such as snow suits and jeans should be avoided if they inhibit the skater's range of motion due to their bulk or tightness, or if they cause the skater to be too hot or too cold.  Preschoolers would best be outfitted in nylon clothing (including mitts) because they are likely to spend more time on the ice.  Plain socks/nylons are better than decorative ones to avoid bunching and pressure points.  To stay warm layering is best!

StarSkate: Female skaters should wear thick beige tights, a skating dress or skating skirt or wrap skirt and body suit with a zipped up fitted sweater.  Pants can be worn occasionally if they are stretchy and snug fitting.  It is very important for the coach to see the skaters body lines. Warm mittens are needed.  It also looks better if the skaters underwear is not showing under their skating dress, skirt or body suit.  Wearing thicker tights will help conceal underwear.  Hair should be tied back with elastics and hair clips to keep it away from the skaters face.  Male skaters should track pants or other pants which allow for a good range of motion, a warm sweater and mitts or gloves.

CanPower:  Power skaters are required to wear full equipment (including a CSA approved helmet) wearing full equipment is for safety since pucks are used on CanPower sessions, and it prepares skaters for hockey or ringette game situations.  Dealing with large pads makes a difference in how a skater moves.  Coaches will also teach the skaters how to deal with their stick while performing skills.

Autograph Opportunity

Ice-Skating Poem

In winter when the biting breezes

Blow and all the water freezes,

Then it's time, it's time to go

Skating on the ice.

Choose a day that's bright and clear,

Bundle up from toe to ear;

It's the time, the time of year

For skating on the ice.

I perch upon the snowy rocks

And pull on both my woolen socks;

I lace my skates and tie them fast

And then I'm up and off at last.

I cannot make a figure eight

(I still have trouble going straight),

But just the same I love to skate,

To ice-skate on the ice.
