Mishkeegogamang Trip Report

The students in Mishkeegogamang were very happy to see us return to their school and community. There is now a Youth Centre program being run several evenings a week in an older log building and they also welcomed us to do music and crafs with the kids in the evenings.   We were able to gift the Youth Centre with an electronic keyboard which they really appreciated.  Randy and Marty provided a crafts extravaganza that the kids loved.  Darlene taught some traditional songs that were very well received and the kids loved singing them over and over.  The 3rd and 5th graders wrote two new songs with Carol which we'll post on the ArtsCan Circle website - one for Halloween about "Ghosts"  and another about their "Wishes".  We had a great time teaching guitar, keyboard and ukulele skills and look forward to our return visit - hopefully before the school year finishes.

Thanks Mishkeegogamang!

Highlights from Randy & Marty:  Being able to to go on ArtsCan Circle trips has been a pleasure and an honour for us both.  That is one great highlight!  Thank you.

Making contact with the kids for a second time - getting to know them better.  Being able to say "next time" and both knowing that it is a true statement.  The school administration staff and teachers was very positive and receptive to us - always building on ArtsCan's presence in the school from previous trips.  ArtsCan Circle is known and understood.  They give us pretty much 'free reign' with the kids and that's great!  Spontaneous gestures of affection from the children toward us.

The string art project seemed to be equally popular with boys and girls, in a wide age range (10 to teens).

I did it!

The group of older youth at the Transitional Program was great.  It is always a delight to work with the older kids who are hesitant at first but quickly come around to participation.  (Sometimes it takes patience and encouragement but it's always worth it in the end!)

(editor's note: Marty and Randy spent one half day working at a the Transitional Program, a new program for older youth who are furthering their education in the community and preparing for high school)

Highlights from Darlene:

The first time I went to Mishkeegogamang (2004) I could see the apprehension in some of the children - especially the older ones.  We had to prove ourselves to them.  We had to be sure that what we were offering was from the heart and we had to be confident that at the least it was going to amuse them.  This trip was very different.  I could tell that the students had become accustomed to visits from ArtsCan Circle and were now looking forward to seeing what it was that we were going to bring to them with curiosity and eagerness.

Learning some keyboard skills on donated instruments

From the Principal of Missabay Community School, Mishkeegogamang:

"I am writing this letter to let you know how beneficial your program has been for our school.  The week your team spent at Missabay Community School proved to be one to the best experiences for our students.

Your enthusiasm and variety of activities were perfectly suited to each individual student's age and grade level.  The students were totally immersed in all activities, which showed them the joy that can be achieved through music and art.  Many students were inspired by your program and are learning the benefit of cooperative learning and sharing in a very positive way.

This is the sixth time you have come to Missabay and each year the students look forward to your arrival.  Again, I thank you for giving us the opportunity to experience your program and we look forward to your next vist.

W. Thorne, Principal"

From Destani Skunk, Brighter Futures Program:

"I would like to extend my thanks on behalf of the youth workers here in Mishkeegogamang. It was great to have you and your team, come in to spend time with the children who attended at our drop in centre.  I am sure the kids enjoyed what they created with the arts and crafts, and the singing was awesome.

Last but not least, a big "Thanks" for the keyboard you donated to the youth centre, again I am sure the kids will enjoy learning to play the keyboard and creating wonderful sounds.  I was glad to have the opportunity to meet you and work with your group and I look forward to seeing you in the near future.

Thank you,

Destani Skunk"

Ukulele Mania Heads North!

A huge thanks to all the folks who donated funds to send Ukuleles to Pikangikum!  Special thanks to the Corktown Ukulele Jam group and all our supporters who rallied to this cause and donated 30 new Ukuleles for Pikangikum.  The Ukes arrived in Pikangikum this week along with a team of musicians to help them get started.    Thanks so much to everyone who supported this project.  Here's a photo of Bob Cutler handing over a symbolic "big Uke" (one Baritone uke) which accompanied and represented the 30 regular Ukes donated at the Corktown Uke Jam.

Stay tuned for photos from the Pikangikum Trip in the next newsletter!
