Give A Gift That Builds Skills and Self-Esteem

Tristan is shyly
smiling for the camera. Although
hesitant to participate at first, this youth from Mishkeegogamang in the far
North of Ontario, has been given one of the greatest gifts -- the opportunity to
feel his own self-worth.
ArtsCan Circle brings art and music programs that help to
build skills and self-esteem to children and youths like Tristan living in
remote Native communities.
In just a few days, for instance, an ArtsCan Circle team including
Wendell Ferguson, Katherine Wheatley, Suzie Vinnick and Anishinabe
visual artist and musician, Leland Bell, are heading to Sioux Lookout. These team members will be providing
workshops in song writing, guitar playing, singing and visual arts at two high schools, Pelican Falls, a First Nations
high school, and Queen Elizabeth High School.
The
generosity of ArtsCan Circle donors has been critical in helping to provide art
supplies, musical instruments and programming to children and youth in remote
Native communities.
At
this special holiday giving time of year
please consider a gift that will help children and youths living in remote
Native communities to build skills and self-esteem.
- Your gift of $25
will provide a Sioux Lookout youth with the paint, brushes and canvas needed to
develop creative expression with mentoring from ArtsCan Circle Artist, Leland
Bell.
- Your gift of
$50 will provide a ukulele and an instructional book for a youth in
Sioux Lookout or another remote community to learn to play and to feel a
sense of accomplishment.
- Your gift of
$75 will provide seven harmonicas for children and youths to learn to
play -- and to take home with them to continue to learn.
- Your gift of
$100 will provide art materials like paper, string, paint, beads, felt
and glue for 50 younger children in a remote Native community to express
themselves through a visual arts project.
- Your gift of
$500 will provide the shipping costs to bring a pallet of instruments
(e.g. 8 guitars, 8 ukuleles and 4 keyboards) to a remote community
allowing children and youths to continue to develop their musical skills
between ArtsCan Circle visits.
- Your gift of
$1,000 will fund a round trip flight for one team
member to a remote community and provide hands-on music and art workshops
for up to 200 children.
Your
gift today of $25, $50, $75, $100 or $500, $1,000 or of any amount you choose will help give the priceless gift of
self-esteem to children and youth in remote Native communities.
At
this gift giving time of year, consider a gift in the name of a friend or
loved one. We'll send a special ArtsCan Circle gift card to your friend
letting them know that you made a donation in their name.
Make your gift on or before December 31,
2009, you will receive a 2009 receipt for income tax purposes.
Your
gift will bring smiles of achievement and self-worth to the faces of children
and youth living in remote Native communities.

Ukulele Mania in Pikangikum!
The trip to Pikangikum took place the first week of November. The ArtsCan Circle team of David Anderson, Nancy Dutra and Roy Hickling had a wonderful time in the Pikangikum conducting workshops in visual arts and music for the students.
Thanks to our generous supporters and the Corktown Uke Jam folks, they had 30 brand new ukuleles to deliver and got the students started learning to play them.

Roy helped older students try their hand with painting workshops- nice work!

David Anderson reports...
"The ukulele classes were just total fun. It was
wonderful to see almost every kid just whacking away on their uke, really
trying to hold the rhythm and to start and stop at the same time! "
