Ukuleles Needed!
This Pikangikum student proudly shows a new ukulele that ArtsCan Circle donated to her school last fall. I could see the happiness and sense of accomplishment in her and her classmates' faces as they learned to play a tune on a real ukulele.
These are proud moments for these children and also for you as a supporter of our work. Thank you for your support that helps to create these precious moments.
As I work on a few last details for an ArtsCan Circle team to return to Sheshatshiu, Labrador, I realize that we need 30 ukuleles to bring with us and to leave with the community for the children to continue to practice between our visits.
I’m writing to ask if you are able to make a gift today of $50 to help us buy a ukulele
and an instructional workbook for a child to learn to play in Sheshatshiu, Labrador.
At the beginning of March, an ArtsCan Circle team including James Hill, a renowned ukulele player, are heading to Sheshatshiu, Labrador. James Hill will be teaching ukulele playing and other team members will be providing workshops in song writing, guitar playing, singing and visual arts.
Your gift today of $50, $75, $100 or $500, $1,000 or of any amount you choose will help give the priceless gift of self-esteem to children and youth in Sheshatshiu, Labrador.
- Your gift of $50 will provide a ukulele and an instructional book for a youth in Sheshatshiu, Labrador to learn to play and to feel a sense of accomplishment.
- Your gift of $75 will provide seven harmonicas for children and youths to learn to play -- and to take home with them to continue to learn.
- Your gift of $100 will provide art materials like paper, string, paint, beads, felt and glue for 50 younger children in a remote Native community to express themselves through a visual arts project.
- Your gift of $500 will provide the shipping costs to bring a pallet of instruments (e.g. 8 guitars, 8 ukuleles and 4 keyboards) to a remote community allowing children and youths to continue to develop their musical skills between ArtsCan Circle visits.
- Your gift of $1,000 will fund a round trip flight for one team member to a remote community to mentor children and youth in music and art.
Your support will help to create moments of joy and self-esteem for Native children and youth living in remote communities.
Thank you,

Sioux Lookout Workshops
December 6 to 12, 2009 saw the team of Katherine Wheatley, Wendell Ferguson, Suzie Vinnick, Leland Bell and Carol Teal brave the Northern temperatures and travel to Sioux Lookout to give workshops in songwriting, blues styles, beginner and advanced guitar and painting to the students at Queen Elizabeth and Pelican Falls High Schools. This trip was initiated and funded by the Nishnawbe-Gamik Native Friendship Centre in Sioux Lookout and we thank them for their support. The team had a wonderful week working with the students and staff at Queen Elizabeth High School and participating in the Christmas concert and feast at Pelican Falls High School.

Proud artists!
Here's what some of the students said:
"I really enjoyed the week the artist visited our school. I was in the art workshop and painted two wolves on a beautiful winter night. Leland Bell was working with us in the native studies classroom. I also painted an eagle watching the earth. I enjoyed it and used my time wisely. I really hope I get to do this again."
Another student said, "I found the week wonderful, very inspiring and thoughtful. Enjoyed painting and listening to some of the stories he told."
Another student, "I found the week with the visitor in our class wonderful. I learned a lot from Leland Bell. He taught me how to blend colours."
"I’m so glad that you guys came to do these workshops. In this week I have grown so much as a musician and I have you to thank for it. Thank you. Julian"
"It is imperative that you send these wonderful people back in the near future. It felt like musician university, all around the best week of high school I’ve experienced yet. Nathan"
"This week has been pretty awesome. I really enjoyed having these wonderful artists here. They should come back! Miigwan "
And from some of the teaching staff:
"As the teacher in the room, I was truly honoured to have such an accomplished artist visit our school and work with my students. I enjoyed listening and observing Leland interact with the students in the classroom. I know my students enjoyed his presence as well. It was a great learning opportunity for everyone:) Thanks again."

"Thank you so much for sharing your time and talent. I know you've inspired many students." Allyson Lucas, Counsellor

Natuashish and Sheshatshiu, Labrador
From November 8 to 13, 2009 Mike Stevens, Magoo, Etienne Rich and David Joyce were very privileged to visit Sheshatshiu and work with children in the brand new school that was recently completed. The school is beautifully appointed with a state of the art music classroom equipped with small stage, sound system, lights, instruments and computer equipment. Everyone seems proud of the new school and according to Mike and Magoo, who have been there many times, the students seem happier and healthier than ever. At Sheshatshiu, we spent time in interactive performances with all classes and introduced grades 3, 4 and 5 to the harmonica.
The teaching staff got involved in the interactive performances and the students sang along to the songs Fredrick sang in the Innu-aimun language.

Natuashish - The team also flew up the Labrador coast to Natuashish. There is no music teacher in the school this year so the teachers were very glad that we were on hand to expose the students to music activities. Workshops included harmonica lessons for all students in grades five to high school and lots of singing and playing along. The sounds of harmonicas were frequent and strong in the school and the community during our visit!
