August 3rd: Women in IT.

Breaking down the digital gender barrier

Given the progress that women have made in society, are women still facing unique challenges in the IT sector?

Join us on Thursday, August 3rd for an interactive session on challenges facing women in technology today, and the opportunities available to overcome them. An expert panel discussion leading into breakout sessions will explore the major factors impacting women working in technology. We will also feature organizations that work with women in technology, bringing their unique perspectives to addressing these needs. With your support, this can be the first in a series of ongoing discussions about the myriad of ways in which women impact IT - and vice versa.

This is a FREE event will take place at the Center for Social Innovation at 215 Spadina Ave at 5:30pm to 7:30pm. SPACE IS LIMITED ALMOST GONE! So, If you’d like to attend the event, please register at our Mollyguard site.

August 5th: Online freedom of speech events

Jon Newton, from Vancouver Island, BC, the founder and editor of p2pnet.net, is being sued by Nikki Hemming, CEO of the infamous Australian Kazaa P2P application. This is a precedent-setting case, the first of its kind, and vividly illustrates the danger of applying ancient laws to Freedom of Expression in the digital age.

A special Online Freedom of Expression round table will take place at Toronto's Centre for Social Innovation, 215 Spadina Avenue, Suite 120, Toronto, from 3 - 5PM. There will also be a fundraiser following the round table at the Rivoli: details are here.

The round table will include:

Moderator: Rob Hyndman

Jon Newton. Jon will have statements from:

  • Phillipa Lawson of CIPPIC
  • Michael Geist, Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law at the University of Ottawa
  • BC media lawyer Dan Burnett who's representing Jon in his upcoming libel case with Kazaa boss Nikki Hemming
  • Jason Munning of Ten Mile Tide, the former Kazaa poster band which dropped its association with Sharman Networks and put its albums online for free to protest the libel action.

Jason Young of Deeth Williams Wall

Michael Pilling of OpenPolitics.ca

Russell McOrmond of Digital Copyright Canada
