The University and the Association of Academic Staff (AAS:UA) have a new agreement that covers the terms and conditions of employment for trust/research academic staff. This new agreement is effective July 1, 2006. New provisions that may affect your research administration include:

Academic Human Resources is working with APOs and personnel contacts in the Faculties and departments to implement the new agreement.

The full story outlining changes is available on the RSO website.

The importance of keeping one's ethics

Maintaining Ethics and Certifications

Once a project is open and the speedcode issued, it's easy to become absorbed in the research and lose sight of ongoing administration. But, students must be paid, budgets revised and ethics and certifications renewed. When grants are awarded for research involving animals or human subjects, ethical approval from the appropriate animal welfare committee or research ethics board must be obtained before the funds are released. In addition, that ethical approval must be maintained throughout the life of the grant. Therefore, if you extend the end date on your grant or agreement, your ethics approval must also cover the additional period of time.

This renewal process often involves filing an annual report and would include any proposed or anticipated changes in the study or protocol. Amendments (for instance, changing personnel or adding a funding agency) are separate from renewals and do not extend the period of ethical approval. Stuck on you

NSERC asks a favour of RTI research teams

NSERC requests that Research Tools and Instrument (RTI) grant awardees affix the "NSERC" stickers they received to equipment funded by their RTI grant.

According to NSERC's Isabelle Blain, VP Research and Scholarships, "Canadians must understand how their tax money is being used. Displaying the NSERC sticker on your equipment will help build public support for scientific and engineering research."

So, stick away!

Lost your sticker? Request another by contacting your Research Facilitation Office.
