Research Dollars Increase By Almost 20 Per Cent

The official Fiscal Year 06-07 financial statements for the University of Alberta were approved by the Board of Governors on June 22, 2007. The University received over $482 million in research revenues last fiscal year (this includes $20.2 million from clinical trials and related research funding at Capital Health and the Alberta Cancer Board). This represents close to a 20 per cent increase over the $404 million received in the previous year.

Change of Deans and Chairs

In certain cases, University policies and procedures require Chairs or Deans to hold projects rather than the Principal Investigators. Projects where the Chair or Dean hold projects by virtue of their positions need to be updated whenever Chairs and Deans change.

Faculties and research administrators are reminded to inform their respective Research Finance Analysts when this occurs by providing them with the names and employee IDs of the outgoing and incoming Chairs and/or Deans. A listing of RSO Finance staff can be found online.

Grants Management Project Update

The Grants Management project has transitioned from Planning & Analysis into the Design phase. The primary objective of this phase is to design, validate and prototype the future state business processes utilizing the PeopleSoft Grants solution. To facilitate this, there are many business decisions to be made, and some design changes will be required to the RSO organization, job procedures, forms and reports. The project team has confirmed the approach and required commitment for the Design phase, which is scheduled for completion by the end of September 2007.

The project leadership and key advisors met recently for a Risk Management workshop, and the project team now has a baseline of risks that will be actively managed. Next, working sessions will be conducted to address major business issues with the first on potential changes to PeopleSoft chart fields. Subsequent sessions will be held on revenue recognition, multi-currency, indirect costs and over-expenditures.

For more information on Grants Management Phase 2, contact the RSO Business Lead, Tamin Pretty, or the AIS Project Steward, Barry Scott.
